Frank Italio (Kuchein) and George Frances (Naagei) were the sons of Kaawus.aa (also known as Kusan and "Dry Bay George") and Shtulkaalgeis', a woman of the Shangukeidi. Therefore, depending on how one figures the generations, Kaawus.aa is either the grandfather or great-grandfather of Emma Frances Marks.
Kaawus.aa was the son of Yaandu.ein, a man of the Kaagwaantaan, and a woman of the L'uknax.adi whose name is no longer remembered.
Frank Italio (Kuchein), George Frances (Naagei), and Maggie Dick (Xux'aawdu.oo) were the children of Kaawus.aa (Dry Bay George) and his first wife, Shtulkaalgeis'. The siblings from his second marriage, (his wife's name is not known), were Kaaljaagi (Sam George), Daakis.axch (Peter George) and Shakw.een (Laura George).

Emma vaguely remembers when Shakw.een was on her death bed. Shakw.een married Dan Smith, and the couple had four children: Hazel, Ray, Jack, and Roy Smith. Hazel Smith married Jay Byron Mallott, Sr. and had four children. There are many descendants from this line, including Patrick M. Anderson of Anchorage. Jay Byron Mallott subsequently remarried, and had more children. Descendants of this line include Byron I. Mallott, for many years Chief Executive Officer of Sealaska Corporation.
Frank Italio was married twice. His first wife was Seigeigei, who was Lukaxadi and Teikweidi yadi. Her brother was John Williams (K'uxaach, Seitaan), who built Shaka Hit, the Canoe Prow House, the ceremonial house of the Dry Bay Lukax.adi, in the early 1920s.

Seigeigei had five children: Leetkwei (Katy Italio Frances), Tl'ayadoo, Gunaanisti, Xoodeilasaa, L.usyeet, and Yeex' Awdu.aas. Except for L.usyeet, Sophie Frances, the English names of Katy's siblings are not known. Frank Italio's second wife was Kutkeinduteen, a L'uknax.adi woman. They had one son, named Ts'aagak'wk'u.
Seigeigei, originally the wife of Frank Italio, was married to his brother George Frances at the time of her death. How she came to be the wife of George Frances is not understood by Emma. When Seigegei died, Katy followed traditional Tlingit marriage patterns of the time and replaced her mother, becoming the wife of George Frances, her paternal uncle. This was a permissible marriage pattern, and in this case, because the groups were dying off, it was also necessary for the continuation of the lineage.
Katy Frances (Leetkwei) had five children, of whom Emma Frances Marks was the oldest. Emma was named Seigeigei after her grandmother, the mother of Leetkwei. Katy's next daughter died when she was still a toddler. The third child was Ernest Frances, named Kaawus.aa after Katy's grandfather. The next child was a daughter named L.usyeet, the namesake of her mother's sister, who was married to Situk Harry and who was the mother of John Harry. Katy's daughter L.usyeet developed epilepsy.

When the medical authorities found out that she had seizures, they sent her away to a hospital for the mentally ill that the family remembers being called Morningside, where she died a few years later. (Tlingit elders describe other cases of people being sent away to mental hospitals for reasons other than mental illness. To date, the family has not been successful in finding the medical records on L.usyeet.) The couple's last child together was a boy named Lkeiteech. When George Frances died, a woman relative took the baby to raise, and he died of unexplained circumstances a short time later.
Some time after Emma's father, George Frances, passed away, Katy married Dick Mason (Kawdugoosh) a man of the Chookaneidi, T'akdeintaan yadi, from Hoonah. The couple had six children. Lkeiteech (David), Kaankeek' Eesh (Peter), a girl named Aaniwdu.oo, who died at Cape Spencer as a toddler and was buried at Dundas Bay, Yeil Tlein (Lawrence George) and Gax Tlein (Paul Jackson.

Dick Mason died in Hoonah during a flu or pneumonia epidemic. Two of his children, Kaankeek' Eesh (Peter) and Aaniwdu.oo, had preceded him in death.
Elders comment that many of the men who died during these epidemics first became ill after perspiring while gathering wood, and then cooling off suddenly.

After the death of Dick Mason, Lawrence George was adopted by Sam George, the younger brother of George Frances, who lived in Yakutat and who took the child to Yakutat. Paul Jackson was adopted by Jimmy and Anny Jackson of Yakutat. Anny was a biological sister of Dick Mason.
After the death of her second husband, Katy married Daaduxaas', Silas Dalton, a Chookaneidl of Hoonah, who was the widower of William Johnson's sister, Lilly St. Clair, Skaanda.aat. The couple had no children. Katy herself died in a drowning accident in the mid-1930s at the age of thirty-eight.

As a child, Nora Marks Dauenhauer remembers her grandmother as "a tall lady with pitch black hair," who liked to tease her grandchildren and who was fun to be with.
